Song of Kaikeyi

August 7, 2008

After spending time studying Paradise Lost last summer, I decided to re-write my “Song of Kaikeyi” poem using the epic meter of Milton (read post). I originally wrote this forty-line poem for my Epics of Ancient India class) based on a scene from the Ramayana. After I completed the revision, I submitted it to The Mythic Circle, the fiction anthology of the Mythopoeic Society. It was accepted: my first piece of published fiction!

I received my contributor copy of The Mythic Circle #30 containing my poem last week. I’m quite happy with how it turned out, with only one minor error: the fourth footnote, indicating that “chariot” should be pronounced as two syllables (chaír-yot), should have been placed in line twenty-five instead of line nineteen. (In line nineteen and everywhere else, it should be pronounced as three syllables.)

I have posted the text of the poem online, along with the audio recording I made last summer, at this new location: [http://journeytothesea.com/kaikeyi/].

My first exposure to The Mythic Circle was the last year’s issue, #29, which had a few really excellent stories. I’m looking forward to reading the current issue.
