In the summer of 2003, I interned as a business analyst for 3M in the eBusiness group within the information technology department. It was a great opportunity for me to see first-hand how a large company manages its public web site.
At the time, the marketing and information technology departments were in the midst of a multi-year project to overhaul 3M.com. I worked directly with one business unit to redesign their specific sub-site to align the sub-site with the company’s overall marketing goals and new technology platform. I conducted interviews with the business unit to gather requirements, and I provided design and technical recommendations for the sub-site.
Throughout the project, I learned a great deal about web design and managing an internet presence. (I put many of the principles I learned that summer into practice in designing my own personal site at this domain.) When I was back at college for my final semester that fall, I worked with the director of the graduate program at my university to produce a research paper about 3M’s project to overhaul 3M.com.
