Losing Weight

November 18, 2007

After returning from London at the end of July, my wife and I started eating healthy and exercising to get in shape and lose weight (learn more about our London trip: Oxford, castles). We had planned to do this for a few years now, but at the beginning of August we finally got serious about it. Before it got too cold, we would run a couple miles at a nearby track — with our baby in a jogging stroller. Since it’s gotten colder, we have joined a nearby gym and been running on the treadmill and participating in exercise classes. These past three months have gone extremely well; I have lost 26 pounds, which is half of my goal.

Before we started, we selected rewards for ourselves when we reach the halfway point. I selected some clothing from the University of Oklahoma (my alma mater), a new sweatshirt and a long-sleeve T-shirt. I ordered them a couple of weeks and they just arrived this week. I fully realize that the second half of my goal will take more time and effort than the first half, but we have definitely established a rhythm that will make that possible.

Speaking of University of Oklahoma, I always spend a lot of time in the fall following college football. As a Sooner fan, the season opened up in an amazing fashion — three dominant victories that gave us hope for a national championship. After that, we lost our first conference game in a humiliating defeat and brought an apparent end to all the championship talk. It turned out to be a season filled with upsets everywhere, and we were actually back in the hunt … until we lost this weekend’s game to Texas Tech. It’s still been a great season and things are looking really good for next season — but it was quite disappointing after what could have been.
