FlickrOne of the most popular web sites on this internet is Flickr, an online photo-sharing site. Since almost all of the photos we take are family photos that we do not want to publish on the internet, I didn’t see the need. A year ago, however, I saw a fun video from The CommonCraft Show that made me realize that we could use a site like Flickr to back up all our digital family photos. (We were already backing up our files on CDs, but that won’t help us if our house burns down.) It took me most of the year to make it a priority, but I signed up for a Flickr Pro account back in December — only $25/year, unlimited storage — and started uploading our pictures. I had hoped to get them all uploaded by the end of the year, but that proved to be too tough of a goal. I just finished last week: we have over 18,000 digital photos.

Here’s the video I mentioned, “Online Photo Sharing in Plain English”:

With Dropbox, Flickr, and a number of other web applications storing my data and files on the internet, I should not lose anything if my hard drive crashes. (Although, admittedly, I’d still rather not have that happen.)
