Software I Use

  • Web Hosting - ICDSoft

I use ICDSoft for web hosting. I strongly recommend them for personal and small business sites. The two things that make ICDSoft a great choice are customer support and the price. They guarantee an hour response to all support tickets, but it’s usually only ten minutes. The hosting starts at only $6 a month, paid annually.

  • Aptana Studio

Aptana Studio provides a full development environment for HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and (through a plugin) PHP. The integrated FTP client works makes it easy to edit files directly on a remote web server. The open source community edition meets my needs for the web sites I develop.

  • Mozilla Firefox

Web browsing with Mozilla Firefox is a much better experience than with Internet Explorer, especially with the countless extensions available for customizing it. As a web developer, I heavily use the Web Developer Toolbar, IETab, and Firebug extensions.

  • Google Apps

Web-based services make up an increasing amount of my software. Google Apps powers email, calendar, and chat here at randyhoyt.com, and I don’t think a make it a day without using Google’s internet search, personalized home page, and feed reader tools.

  • Backpack

I also use web-based services from 37signals. Backpack has been an effective tool for keeping track of ideas, notes, tasks, and lists. The free version of their excellent CRM tool Highrise works well for my wife and me to manage our family address book.
