I attended my first web design conference this weekend, Webmaster Jam Session. I had a good time and learned quite a bit. All of the sessions were good, but a handful really made an impression on me:
Inspiration: Rob Weychart’s talk, A Field Guide for Design Inspiration, really opened my eyes to how creative people cultivate a lifestyle of creativity. I definitely plan to fill my life with more creative inspiration, starting with more photography and more time outdoors.
Interface Design: Garrett Dimon is an information architect and interface designer living here in Dallas. I keep up with his web site and was really looking forward to his talk, Behind the Curtain. He did not disappoint with his amazing insight into building a web application. (Slides at Slidehare)
Typography: I had started to get interested in typography before the conference. Jeff Croft’s talk, Beyond the Font, pushed me in the right direction. Among other valuable lessons, Jeff emphasized using a baseline grid for text: I had read about it recently in an article online but had never been exposed to it before that. (Slides in PDF)
