Myth Enthusiast

Ever since I first created this personal site, I have sought to describe myself in a short sentence or phrase that I could display on it — like a tagline you’d find with a brand. In response to reading Pathways to Bliss, I have updated my own personal tagline:

Randy Hoyt: Myth Enthusiast and Web Developer

I have made quite a few changes to my web site’s structure and content to reflect this change. I wanted to point out one new page in particular: since there might be some confusion about what I mean by myth when I say I am a myth enthusiast, I thought it would be useful to create a page explaining it (you can also find this link on the home page):

My first month or so pouring myself into myth has gone well. I have read some fascinating books and have even written some short essays and stories. I still haven’t figured out the best form in which to publish these writings online, but I think I’ll start by adding some book reviews to this site soon.

With this restructuring, I have separated my freelance web work to its own site. I decided on the name “Amesbury Web” some time ago for my web development studio, and you can now find my freelance portfolio over at amesburyweb.com.

In addition to changing the structure and the content of the site, I also decided to update the design. I had not redesigned the site in years, restrained primarily by this article about redesigns. With such a major change to the site structure, however, it felt like a good time to add a fresh coat of paint. I developed a new color scheme and found some icons over at IconBuffet that complemented it to produce a fun and casual design.

Here is some of the geekery behind the new design: I removed the www from this domain name; if you type in www.randyhoyt.com, it will now remove it for you. The new design uses a three-column horizontal grid and has the type set on a 24-pixel vertical baseline grid. (I switch the stylesheets to test the grid; if you are interested and daring, you can use these links to turn it on and off: view grid | back to normal.) The design also uses ems for all the dimensions, so the whole thing scales nicely as you increase the text size.
